Current status: Wohngeld 2026
The values last adjusted on 1 January 2025 continue to apply. They take into account the rent level of the respective city – in Leipzig rent level II. The Wohngeld calculator works with these values.
Decided: Wohngeld amendment for 1 January 2027
On 6 July 2026, the federal cabinet adopted the draft of a Wohngeld amendment. It provides for a re-regulation of Wohngeld on 1 January 2027: suspending the previously planned increase, halving the heating cost component and changing the calculation formula. Already approved decisions remain valid until the end of their term. The draft is now in the parliamentary process.
Why regular adjustments?
Rents and incomes change. So that Wohngeld keeps its effect, maximum amounts, rent levels and income limits are reviewed regularly. The adjustments ensure that the benefits keep pace with developments.
Why regular checking is worthwhile

No – already approved decisions are not affected by the planned amendment and remain valid until the end of their term, usually 12 months, in exceptional cases 24 months. Independently of this, it is worth checking your own situation if your income or household changes.
