Wohngeld Plus: more support for housing costs
Wohngeld Plus has applied since 1 January 2023: the reform noticeably strengthened Wohngeld and added two permanent components – a heating cost component and a climate component. Here we explain what this means for households in Leipzig.
What is Wohngeld Plus?
Wohngeld Plus is the major Wohngeld reform of 2023. Since then, significantly more households are entitled to Wohngeld – and payments have increased on average. The reform applies uniformly nationwide.
Heating cost component: permanently more for heating
The heating cost component permanently includes part of the heating costs in Wohngeld. It supplements the rent subsidy and is calculated automatically – no separate application is needed.
Climate component: supplement for energy-efficient housing
The climate component is a supplement for households in homes with a high energy standard. It takes into account that such homes offer particular advantages in heating costs.
Regular adjustments since 2023
Wohngeld benefits have been reviewed and adjusted regularly since the reform. The values were last updated on 1 January 2025. For 2027, the federal cabinet adopted a reorganisation on 6 July 2026.
What Wohngeld Plus means for Leipzig
The Wohngeld Plus rules also apply uniformly nationwide in Leipzig – with rent level II for the calculation. Thanks to the higher benefits, significantly more Leipzig households have been entitled to Wohngeld since 2023.
