Wohngeld amount: how the subsidy is calculated
How much Wohngeld you receive depends on three factors: the number of household members, the gross rent excluding heating and the household's total income. In Leipzig, rent level II is added. The calculation follows a fixed scheme of the Wohngeldgesetz (WoGG).
The three factors of the calculation
Household members
The more people in the household, the higher the maximum amounts considered for rent.
Gross rent excluding heating
The rent without heating costs is taken into account – capped by the rent level's maximum amount.
Total income
Taxes, contributions and allowances are deducted from the household income. The lower the countable income, the higher the subsidy.
The role of rent level II in Leipzig
The rent level caps which part of the rent is considered for Wohngeld. Leipzig is in rent level II – a medium rent level. If the rent is above the maximum amount, the excess part is not considered.
How the calculation works
The law combines the eligible rent with the countable income: as income rises, the subsidy decreases until it stops completely at the income limit. The Wohngeld calculator performs the exact calculation – the binding decision is made by the Wohngeld office.
Wohngeld is adjusted regularly
Maximum amounts and rent levels are reviewed and adjusted regularly – most recently by the Wohngeld Plus Act. It is therefore worth re-checking your entitlement regularly.
